How to Freeze Steamed Asparagus: Pure and Simple Steaming is one of the simplest ways to cook Asparagus. This method helps to retain the most vitamins and nutrients and leaves the asparagus crisp and fresh tasting.

  1. Asparagus
  2. Water

  1. Prepare ice water bath in sink (Add enough ice and water to cover vegetables once steamed)
  2. Rinse asparagus and gently pat dry.
  3. Rinse asparagus well and *snap (or cut) off tough bottom end *see note
  4. Add water to cover the bottom of med pan and place steamer insert inside (water should not reach the steamer basket.
  5. Once water begins to simmer, place asparagus in steamer basket, cover pan with lid. Do not remove lid until time is up to keep steam from escaping)
  6. Steam for 3-4 minutes depending on size of the stalks.(Asparagus will be bright green)
  7. Remove lid from pan, and immediately plunge the steamer basket with asparagus into ice water bath to stop the cooking process. Allow to sit for several minutes.
  8. Remove asparagus from ice water bath, allow to drain and gently pat dry.
  9. Place asparagus on baking sheet spread out without touching and put into the coldest part of the freezer.
  10. Freeze completely.
  11. Gently remove from baking sheet to prevent breakage and place into a heavy duty freezer bag, removing as much air as possible while sealing, or use vacuum sealer.
  12. Label and date.

  1. #1 Usually the toughest part of the asparagus is at the bottom thicker end. To remove, hold stalk firmly by its middle with one hand and grasp the end of the stalk with the other. Pull, in opposite directions with a quick movement to snap off the end. The break usually occurs where the stalk is toughest, leaving only the tender part of the stalk behind.
