One easy way to cook like a pro is by taking advantage of all the wonderful herbs and spices available for flavoring your dishes. Part of the fun of cooking is in the creating.  Have fun, experiment, don’t be afraid to try new things or tweak a recipe here and there to make your own delicious creation.  Below are 10 spice blends to put in your pantry to get you started.

Cajun Seasoning Blend

  1. 2 tbsp cayenne powder
  2. 2 tbsp garlic salt
  3. 2 tbsp paprika
  4. 1 tbsp chili powder
  5. 1 tbsp cumin
  6. 1 tbsp black peppercorns
  7. 1 tbsp onion powder
  8. 1 tbsp celery salt
  9. 4 tsp dried oregano
  10. 4 tsp dried thyme
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients in clean coffee grinder, spice grinder or food processor.
  2. Pulse until well blended.
  3. Store in airtight container, in cool dry place away from direct sunlight.

  3. 2 tbsp thyme
  4. 2 tbsp oregano
  5. 2 tbsp basil
  6. 2 tbsp marjoram

Garam Masala

Ingredients
  1. 1-inch piece cinnamon stick, broken into pieces
  2. 2 bay leaves
  3. 1/4 cup cumin seeds
  4. 1/3 cup coriander seeds
  5. 1 tablespoon green cardamom pods
  6. 1 tablespoon whole black peppercorns
  7. 2 teaspoons whole cloves
  8. 1 dried red chile
  9. 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  10. 1/8 teaspoon ground mace
Instructions
  1. Heat the cinnamon, bay leaves, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, cardamom pods, whole peppercorns, cloves, and chile in a medium skillet over medium-high heat, stirring often, until the cumin becomes brown, 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to a spice grinder or coffee mill, add the nutmeg and mace, and grind until powder fine. Store in an airtight container for up to 4 months.

  1. 2 tablespoons whole cumin seeds
  2. 2 tablespoons whole cardamom seeds
  3. 2 tablespoons whole coriander seeds
  4. 1/4 cup ground turmeric
  5. 1 tablespoon dry mustard
  6. 1 teaspoon cayenne

Instructions
  1. Heat the cumin seeds, cardamon seeds, and coriander seeds on medium heat in small dry skillet for 3 - 5 minutes until seeds begin to lightly brown and become fragrant. Stir frequently to toast evenly. Cool.
  2. Place all ingredients in an airtight container. Store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight.
  3. When ready to use, shake well and place amount desired in spice grinder, or coffee grinder and pulse until well ground.
