25 Days of Christmas Cookies: Day 17 – Snickerdoodle Bars

Fail not to call to mind, in the course of the twenty-fifth of this month, that the Divinest Heart that ever walked the earth was born on that day; and then smile and enjoy yourselves for the rest of it; for mirth is also of Heaven’s making.  ~Leigh Hunt

During the past month as I gathered recipes for 25 Days of Christmas Cookies a request for snickerdoodles was made.  I am a big fan of this cookie so including them in my line up was not a difficult decision to make. While researching for the perfect recipe I came across a snickerdoodle bar that was a bit different then the norm and enticed me into trying a bar cookie instead.

This simple snickerdoodle bar requires no cookie dough balls, no need for rolling in cinnamon sugar, and is quick and easy to throw together with the classic snickerdoodle taste.  Added bonus, your whole house will smell like cinnamon toast.

25 Days of Christmas Cookies: Day 15 – Chocolate Melting Snowmen

Something about an old-fashioned Christmas is hard to forget.
-Hugh Downs (1921- ), American newscaster.

Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Christ and recognizing the significance of that fact. It is also about family gathering and spending time together. Today, my son and his beautiful wife arrive to spend 12 glorious days with us and I for one am so excited I can barely contain myself.

My son and his wife live in Japan and I only have the opportunity to see them once every couple of years, thus my excitement at their visit. The house is clean, decorations are spread and we certainly need not worry about cookies. My only sadness is that my daughter and her fiance can not be here to share in our holiday celebrations.

You who have children still at home, be sure to hold them close and treasure the moment you have together. Time flys all too quickly.

I love the chocolaty melting snowmen, they are so adorable. I had to try my hand at making them, if only for novelty’s sake. Turns out they are not only adorable but tasty too. I was surprised to find peanut butter in the cookie and loved the chocolaty peanut taste. They go together quickly and are easy to make. A simple recipe well worth trying.

25 Days of Christmas Cookies: Day 11 – Macadamia Nut Dream Bars

While today we don hats and mittens and travel door to door wishing our neighbors good cheer in song, caroling originally had little to do with Christmas. The carols of the 12th and 13th centuries were liturgical songs reserved for church processionals. The type of caroling we’re more familiar with didn’t arrive until England’s Victorian era. Many popular seasonal songs — “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing!,” “The First Noel,” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” — were written around that period. – A Brief History of Christmas Traditions, Time.Com

Christmas caroling door to door was a wonderful tradition I for one, wish would be revived again. A whole generation has missed out on a tradition that used to be very special. I have fond memories of bundling up in heavy coat, scarf and mittens, climbing onto a flatbed truck with other kids from my church youth group and caroling all through our neighborhoods. It was a magical time and helped to bring the reason for the season home to me more than any other activity I participated in. After caroling, we all came back to our house to stand by the fire to warm up and drink  hot chocolate and eat freshly baked cookies.  Spread the word, bundle up your kids and head to your neighbors and sing a song or two. Maybe we might be able to bring this tradition back.

Macadamia Nut Dream bars are a new twist on an old favorite, the seven layer bar. I chose to switch things up a bit with vanilla wafers as the cookie crust base and top it off with macadamia nuts. Beware, these bars are addictive. I bet you can’t eat just one.

25 Days of Christmas Cookies: Day 3 – Black and White Peppermint Bars

“Candy canes, one of the popular sweet treats used for Christmas, originally were straight white sticks of sugar candy. They were used as an embellishment for Christmas trees. The ends of the candy were bent by Cologne Cathedral, to symbolize a shepherd’s crook. The candy canes were given red stripes only in 20th century.” – Christmas Trivia from I love India.com

Now that Thanksgiving is over, the Christmas preparations have begun in earnest. As I look ahead at the normal preparations, parties, and gatherings to come,  I am beginning to think I am a little bit nuts to have taken on this big task of 25 cookies in 25 days.

For the average blogger, all the cookies, pictures, and prep work for the next 25 days would be done and ready to post. Unfortunately, I am a bit of a rebel (okay, procrastinator), and the great plans I had to have all my little ducks in a row did not materialize. So now, I get to scramble. 25 Days of Christmas Cookies: Day 3 - Black and White Peppermint Bars.

Fortunately, I thrive in scramble mode and flying by the seat of my pants so this should be a piece of cake. Okay, maybe not, but I am up for the challenge. A little encouragement would be greatly appreciated here and I am not above pandering for all that I can get.

Wish me luck.
